Learn About Selective Laser Melting

The Selective laser melting process works by fusing layers of metal powder in specific places using a laser.

The base concept consists of 6 major elements:

1. Laser

2. Laser motion system

3. Printing Z-axis

4. Powder supply

5. Recoater

6. Powder overflow

The process starts with a metal base plate that is of the same material as the metal powder.

Then the powder supply will move upward to supply some powder and the printing Z-axis will move down a step.

The recoater will then spread the metal powder over the base plate/previous layer and excess powder is deposited in the powder overflow.

The Laser motion system will then move the Laser and the laser is activated in the areas where the part is, this fuses the new layer of powder to the base plate/ previous layer.

This process of supplying a new layer of metal powder and melting the powder in the required areas is repeated until the part is finished.
